Full bottles of wine should be stored on the side so that the cork does not dry out and shrink. If the cork shrinks then the airtight seal does not work and the wine becomes ruined.

When I store my botoles of wine I store them on their sides so the cork does not dry out and get a nasty moldy smell to them when you uncork the wine. Or this is also called cork dry.
So the cork will not dry out.
To keep the corks from drying out, and allowing air into the bottle, and spoiling the wine.
It lets the cork wet and keep the cork from drying out and breaking while you are opening the bottle.
corks are kept wet to prevent both mold growth on the cork and the cork drying out. It’s my understanding that in the wine industry, cork failure is extremely common, resulting in bad wine. There is a movement to move from real cork to synthetic cork, some are even putting screw tops on their wines.
